That sucks Brady. I had something very similar. It was pain in my plantar plates (both feet). That "stone on the bottom of your foot" feeling is what I felt as well. It wasn't a stress fracture. Podiatrist initially thought capsulitis, but my symptoms weren't exactly that. Just went with "plantar plate strain". Took some time off, got custom orthotics (redirect the foot strike force away from plantars), switched to high-stack Hoka Skyward X's for more cushioning, stuck to soft surface running for a few weeks, did eccentric calf stretches twice-daily.
It got better after a few weeks; now several months later I run pain-free. But it's so hard to pause training when you've put in the work, and you're in great shape.
Ouch every which way… I had very similar pain symptoms and somehow stumbled into an eval and treatment with a chiropractor! Fixed within 10 days after all else didn’t suffice. Who knew chiropractors treat foot problems!
Please do the injury history post you mentioned as a possibility. Every serious distance runner deals with at least the occasional injury or strain (and many of us deal with what feels like constant injuries) and I'm sure you have lessons and wisdom from your injury struggles that we could all learn from or relate to. Good luck with the foot! I've had a stress reaction in a metatarsal before and (no surprise) I got it about a month out from my goal race for the year.
This would be my strategy. Switch up to your slow shoe. In my case the Hoka Mach 5. You do rotate shoes right? Run every day even if it is a mile. Again, easy. Evaluate the pain daily. Make a log. Sometimes these pains are transitory and are better worked through. Next, I would recommend taking the really hard runs to the track. The track has a consistent surface that allows for higher intensity with a lower risk of injury. Next, feet. My recommendation is to strength train in your socks. Finally, if you are interested in attending the Running Event one day Dec 2-4, I would be willing to pay for your admission. Protocol is you stop by my booth, TravelRunner.com, chat me up for a bit and if you like what you see then make a post about it.
Hey - I’ve really been enjoying your training updates and recaps. It’s some impressive running. I’ll be running CIM as well this year, though no where near as fast. Appreciate the video update on the injury, and truly hoping it’s nothing serious. Everyone who is reading your updates has dealt with something, at some point in time - so we all know the anguish that you’re going through. Hang in there and keep hoping for the best.
Sorry to hear about your injury, every runner knows how frustrating and demoralising these things can be, especially when you were looking really fit and ready for the race.
With that said, we all know that the goal is to play the long game and we can only do that if healthy so make sure you get the issue sorted and there will always be more races

Some say they're a scam. Others say they're miracle workers. :)
Thanks for sharing , Hutch!

Appreciate the video update dude. Injuries are challenging in many ways.

Thanks Erica, and good luck at CIM!
Sounds like a Plantar Plate injury. MRI needed.
Tough one…best wishes for quick recovery.
Thanks Will.

Unfortunate, best of luck Brady. All the best.
unfortunately been dealing with a similar foot issue for a few months now, so sorry man, hope it’s nothing serious
