Brady, one of the best, most informative posts on Substack. Full stop.

Thank you, your takes are insightful and I entirely agree with how studies are presented vs. interpreted in real life.

Now if you can build muscle while loosing fat, the holy grail, you might wind up lighter and while you will possibly burn a little more calories while watching tv every body weight exercise from walking to cycling will burn fewer calories. You'll probably still have to eat less to maintain your new composition.

On a recent 100km bicycle ride with my wife she was disappointed to see my estimated burned calories were much lower than hers. It was a much easier ride for me but I'm also much heavier.

I completely agree that muscle burns less calories than people think. HOWEVER, to be fair, you need to include the calories burned while BUILDING the muscle, ie the training, just like you do for the cardio training.

Brady Holmer's avatar

Yes, but even then, resistance training burns a meager amount of calories/energy compared to aerobic training (time-matched).

But are you not in a calorie surplus anyway if you are trying to build muscle?

"In a later experiment, researchers maintained old and young mice in heterochronic parabiosis for three months and found reductions in epigenetic age in the blood and liver of the old animals." What happened with the younger mice? No difference for them?

Great question… I’m not sure. Got older? Raw end of the bargain :)

If we ever reach a point where we can 'sell' good blood to improve performance in events I wonder how blood type relates to this. Imagine a future where a O- person makes it his/her business to sell its blood, but that would not be a possibility for an AB+ person. Before that kind of 'blood trade' is possible, most likely this will have been figured out.

Instead of buying it to improve performance would it not be that people are buying it to improve tose that are not able to or interested in exercising? We might get free marathon entires with this marketing plan.

It could, and it will all be very interesting, as long as it doesn’t turn into an unregulated nightmare.
