Well that was interesting! I'm not sure a $5 a day habit would be worth it. Hmmm, have to think about it. Thanks!

Thanks John! Need not be an everyday thing either. A few times per week after targeted sessions could be a more budget friendly strategy.

If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone from Ketone IQ praise the benefits of ketones while referencing a study done with ketone ESTERS, I could probably afford the intervention described in this substack.

Fair point Nate and perhaps a bit disingenuous of me not to call that out. So while aware “ketones aren’t ketones”, the idea that a certain level of ketosis is what elicits the benefits (not the supplements itself) is what matters here.

The real question that needs to be studied is “what level is ketosis is important, and for how long”. It’s pretty clear that ketone esters offer a much more immediate and higher level of ketosis than ketone IQ, which is what always bugs me about drawing conclusions and making assumptions from studies on a completely different molecule.

Yes. It seems 2-3 mM range is where these recovery benefits begin to manifest. And getting to that level does require a couple of IQ shots vs. a single dose of KE.

Do you have any real data to show that “a couple of IQ shots” gets you to the 2-3mM range?

Thanks, I really enjoy your X feed and even more your substack. Following this article any suggestions on how ketones should be cycled throughout training season?

Brady Holmer's avatar

Not sure you need to “cycle” them… just think about the key sessions you want to place them around!

Brady...a quick question for you. The study you referenced analyzed trained athletes. I assume these athletes are in a prime age bracket as well. Do you have a feel for how would Ketone supplementation impact middle aged athletes? I'm in my late 50s and while I once had an elite VO2 Max, I'm now in the mid 40s (not bad for my age, but in need of a lift). Just wondering if ketones would provide a benefit to my training. Thanks in advance, Ed

Hi Ed! Anything I say is speculation because we don't have data, but I don't see why the findings here wouldn't apply to someone like yourself (in fact, they might be greater considering room for overall improvement is higher).

I'll do some research of my own, but this actually sounds interesting...maybe I can get a little quicker in the chase for my youth!
